Alan:

I'm not familiar with the default Varian installation, but I am familiar
with linux and RHEL.

First, make sure that you have the openssh-server installed. Do this to
see what ssh packages are installed:

rpm -qa |grep ssh

Assuming that it is installed, you next have to make sure that it is
enabled to start up at boot time. There is probably a gui to do this,
but I usually run 'ntsysv' in a command window. Use the arrow keys to
move down the list and see if there is an asterisk in place for sshd.
If not, press the spacebar to put one there. Then use the tab key to
move down to OK.

The other possibility is that the iptables firewall software is not
allowing ssh. You can check that with:

system-config-securitylevel

BTW, once you get it working, I recommend that you edit
/etc/ssh/sshd_config, find this line:

# PermitRootLogin yes

Remove the comment and change the yes to no. You should not allow root
to ssh in. Use a normal username and then do su if you need root
access. My server logs very frequently show attempts from all over the
world to login as user 'root'!
