AMMRL:

We wanted to give this group an update about our recent inquiry to resurrect
Dr. Shapiro's NMR newsletter. The responses we received were very positive
and all indicated that they would like to see the newsletter re-started.
Many offered their assistance (like hosting a web page for the newsletter).
We liked the idea of the web site, especially as a vehicle for submitting
contributions in addition to an archival area for the newsletter. If there
are no concerns, we will get started on re-issuing the newsletter. As I
mentioned in my previous email, our intent is to use the same format as the
original NMR newsletter, and keep the name. The content of the
contributions would not be reviewed for scientific merit, but would be
reviewed to ensure appropriateness. Through technical contributions,
vendors would be able to freely advertise. The newsletter would also be a
place where NMR folks can submit job opportunities, meeting announcements
etc. Since the newsletter will be electronic, and probably in pdf format, a
section at the end will be provided for web links back to vendor web sites.
There were many who offered help. Chris Rithner (Colorado State University)
was the lucky (or unlucky depending on your point of view) colleague where
we held him to his offer. Additionally Chris will develop and host a web
site for the newsletter, where submitters will be able to "drop" their
contributions at anytime. Then at a specified time each month (frequency
depending on the number of contributions), the document would be compiled
into a format suitable for distribution through an electronic mailing list.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will draft a flyer which will advertise
the newsletter and give instructions for potential contributors. One of us
(Brian) plans on attending the ENC this year, so hopefully we will have the
flyer finished in time to post at this meeting. We also welcome suggestions
as how to improve the NMR Newsletter. Since this will be handled
electronically, there are many things that can be done that were not
possible when it was issued in printed form.

Brian, Mike and Chris
