We had the same type of behavior with our Inova 400. It turned out to be a faulty sensor.
Varian replaced the upper barrel and sensor. The problem has not re-occurred.

Subject: Strange behavior of spinning sensor
Dear Friends:
I recently experienced strange behavior of the spinning
detection sensor on my Inova 600. The sample spins well in the
upper barrel/probe, but the spinning rate is not displayed in the
acquisition status window, the SPINNER: off . When I took the
upper barrel out of the magnet and tested the sample spinning
outside of magnet, it worked well and the spinning rate was shown
on the acquisition status window and SPINNER: regulated. Once I
put the upper barrel into the magnet, the problem showed up, even
without the probe in the magnet, I turned off VT and cooling air flow
also. I repeated this three time, it showed the same thing.
Any help and suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks.
