I have now posted the data from NMR laboratories in industry and
government. There were relatively few responses and I surmise that those
respondents are very non-representative of industrial NMR managers in general.
The data are posted at
http://labmanagers.com and I encourage AMMRL members
to have a look because I am going to recommend that we no longer solicit
salary information from anyone but academic NMR managers in the US.
* I don't think we'll get a meaningful sample.
* Letters recommending salary improvements would not be welcomed by
industrial management.
* Industrial NMR scientists are very likely compensated in accordance with
the same factors that apply to other chemists: experience, degree level,
responsibility, etc., and American Chemical Society has the relevant data
there.
As a friend who is prominent in industrial NMR wrote me this morning, "Your
salary information was very interesting. Just FYI the salaries being
offered to some recent graduates (organic chemists) on the East coast by
drug companies have a range of $80,000 - 87,000 + a signing bonus
($15,000-20,000). This is for individuals right out of school with no
post-doc."
He continues, "It would seem to me that given the responsibilities of an
NMR Lab Manager, the ca. $59,000-60,000 average that you report is way
below what I would expect for that kind of position...The lab manager has a
lot of responsibility so it would seem that the term 'underpaid' might
apply here."
I'm not going to quarrel with that. Academia has its perks, but monetary
rewards can be quite disappointing.
Anyway, let me know if you DISAGREE with dropping industrial data
gathering. I will take silence on the matter as agreement.
