We have a dedicated air compressor for or Varian 500 MHz NMR. We bought ours from Werther Internal, Inc. (https://www.werther.com/). We used one that is enclosed and we placed it on a set of foam rubber pads. Between the pads and the air legs of the NMR itself, the instrument is fully isolated from the vibrations of the compressor. It does not a cut-off valve on the output, so when we are not using the instrument we just close the valve and let the NMR settle back on the legs.

Subject: ammrl: backup air compressor

Hey spinlanders,

We are having issues with facilities and the compressors that provide the NMR lab with compressed air. Every other month or so, the compressors go down for a day or two and we cannot use the NMRs due to a lack of air pressure. Some of the faculty are offering to purchase electric air compressors ( https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-30-Gal-155-PSI-Ultra-Quiet-Portable-Electric-Air-Compressor-C302H/206695048<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.homedepot.com%2Fp%2FHusky-30-Gal-155-PSI-Ultra-Quiet-Portable-Electric-Air-Compressor-C302H%2F206695048&data=02%7C01%7CThpritch%40cedarcrest.edu%7C4049ba0aa7e44887a84d08d83e327e40%7Cd880b2161d3e4c3c9455fc43d98137d6%7C1%7C0%7C637327733878480874&sdata=ALHTXkVDFk1CJLFoUzeNJqZMprFrbg3ZkfXEaY4Nw%2BE%3D&reserved=0>) for us to use when the house air pressure drops.

Before I go through with the purchase, I figured I would ask AMMRL if anyone has a similar set up or if it is a bad idea to use a commercial compressor. We would plum it into the lines so that it will go through all the filters that the house compressed air goes through. I am worried about the vibrations and the noise in the lab, but am curious what peoples opinions are.

Thanks,
