My problem has been solved by Maxim Dubinnyi.

All I needed to do was to uncomment the following line:

# $opt_native = 1; # Remove first # in this line!!!!

in /opt/xwinnmr/exp/stan/nmr/au/makeau or
/opt/topspin1.3/exp/stan/nmr/au/makeau

Now I can compile au progs in both XwinNMR 3.6 and TopSpin 1.3 on both
CentOS 4.4 and 5.11.
