Dear Spinlanders,

What a marvelous community!
Thank you for the insights and advice!
The advice was helpful (and also helped us not feel so all alone).
I particularly appreciated a Bruker rep providing advice and encouragement.

The overwhelming consensus is UPS problems, and try to power up the instrument directly from the power source.

We contacted the UPS vendor, and they plan to replace the entire UPS first thing tomorrow.
The UPS is less than a year old...
We will not attempt to reboot the NMR until the UPS is replaced.
We're too fearful of losing a component in our aging console, so we want to minimize power up/down-even controlled ones.

Fingers crossed with "spin up" thinking :-)

Best from all of us here at Wooster!

Subject: AMMRL: Unexplained shutdown of NMR connected to UPS?

Dear Spinlanders,

Do any of you have experience with an unexplained shutdown of an NMR connected to a UPS?
We have an older 400 MHz Bruker AVANCE-we're pursuing funding for a replacement.

The instrument was working fine this morning, but this afternoon
* the UPS alarm was beeping
* the instrument had shut down
* there was a burnt electrical smell in the room.

We unplugged the power cord from the wall to the UPS and disconnected the cord from the instrument to the UPS.
Once the power was disconnected and the room door left open, the smell vented and we can't smell the burning electric smell anymore.
We do not see any obviously damaged or discolored parts on any of the equipment.

We've replaced our console cooling fans within the past five years.
The UPS was upgraded within the last year.
To the best of our knowledge there was no power outage.
We don't have reason to believe that a power surge occurred, but anything is possible.

Our plan is to contact Bruker first thing Monday morning.
If you have insights to share we're greatly appreciative.

Best
Judy
