If UPS was beeping then it is probably set of batteries. There are six batteries and they should be replaced about once in three years. Check with Emerson ( I guess your UPS from them) for PM service.

Subject: AMMRL: Unexplained shutdown of NMR connected to UPS?

Dear Spinlanders,

Do any of you have experience with an unexplained shutdown of an NMR connected to a UPS?
We have an older 400 MHz Bruker AVANCE—we’re pursuing funding for a replacement.

The instrument was working fine this morning, but this afternoon
• the UPS alarm was beeping
• the instrument had shut down
• there was a burnt electrical smell in the room.

We unplugged the power cord from the wall to the UPS and disconnected the cord from the instrument to the UPS.
Once the power was disconnected and the room door left open, the smell vented and we can’t smell the burning electric smell anymore.
We do not see any obviously damaged or discolored parts on any of the equipment.

We’ve replaced our console cooling fans within the past five years.
The UPS was upgraded within the last year.
To the best of our knowledge there was no power outage.
We don’t have reason to believe that a power surge occurred, but anything is possible.

Our plan is to contact Bruker first thing Monday morning.
If you have insights to share we’re greatly appreciative.

Best
Judy
