Interesting topic.
My researchers use the NMR daily so little refresher
training is necessary.
I provide approx. 2 hours individual training at the start for
learning protocols and performing simple 1-D Proton/Carbon/Dept.
They are encouraged to come back for more training refresher or new training -
it takes time, but I'd rather people using equipment properly than
trying to correct problems in the future which would take even more time.
I require that every new experiment or use of a different spectrometer
requires further training, and I try to cover a little extra
material than what is needed each time.
Interesting - we talk about how users should not use the NMR as a black
box (which I agree, but to there are many levels of gray here).
I remember not to long ago that in order to use a computer,
one needed to know boolean logic, programming.
If you were going to open up a computer to
install something, you'd better have some EE behind you.
Now most computer users have no idea how a computer works-
even on the block diagram level,
and people who know know to put a few boards into slots think they
know how to "build a computer".
