At my institution we decided against this. A company like this will keep track
of a large fleet of instruments and the associated contracts. This will
help with uptime and bring down coordination costs with uptime at something
like a medical laboratory.
However when there is a small number of diverse instruments, there is no
advantage in an outsource like this. It will be better to train a willing
person and build contacts at nearby institution to help with the NMR & similar.
My experience with maintenance contracts is that they may be helpful in case
of high turnover, however, problems are most often detected by users and staff
and then brought to the attention of the service engineer. It does help to
have a good relationship with the engineer.
