Thanks to all the respondents of my query on remote NMR via modem and
X-sessions. A summary:

A modem (14.4 or 28.8 Kbps)is used to work away from the lab (e.g. home).
A PC or Mac with X-server software is used to connect to the spectrometer
computer (which is assumed to be running an X-Window GUI-based NMR
program).

Difficulties which can arise are: too much load on the workstation (e.g.
2D processing while someone else is acquiring data) can cause the disk to
crash--this is circumvented by having separate workstations for
processing; speed of the phone line can be a limiting factor, but people
have been able to do what can be done on-site (with the exception of
loading the sample and tuning), if one is not too impatient.
