Re: ups-followup

Many short-lived power outages occur in our labs, mostly due to
rainstorms, and a UPS for the workstation (ours is a DEC 3000 Model 300LX)
alone is not sufficient. This is because the console goes down (a JEOL
Lambda series LA400), and when power resumes, the console no longer
communicates with the workstation. Like you said, it spoils our overnite
runs, renders our purchase of an auto sample changer and electrical power
generating set useless (it takes a minumum of 8 seconds before it switches
on automatically) and taxes our sense of humor.

My solution is to put everything on a UPS-a separate UPS for the
computer, and another for the console. The console takes quite a bit of
power (3-4 KVA), so the UPS will be quite expensive. But considering our
electrical situation, worth it.
