Possibly an extreme measure, but, we did put our 500 in a hole 4 ft below
ground level with an aluminium ballustrade and proper stairs; this meets all
our HSE rules. In fact we built the pit to move the magnet away from steel
ceiling beams, but it extremely useful for the 4ft spectroscopist. Sample
insertion is just below waist height and helium refills are simple!
Actually all this was not too expensive for us as our floor was suspended and
the void below was 4ft high: all we did was cut a hole adjacent to the joists,
build a brick wall all round supporting the joists, skim the floor and carpet
it, seal the walls, put in a nice wide set of steps and get contractors to
design the handrail. We also left a couple of holes in the wall so all of the
cables go through the wall, under the floor, and come up exactly under the
console.
