remote NMR for undergraduates (cont.)

I continue to receive helpful and instructive replies to my question about
good ways to permit remote access and processing of NMR data. Most
respondents are on the side of using remote PC's and Mac's as X-clients and
I am assured that a PowerMac or a PC even as "primitive" as a 466/33 will
perform admirably.

Some respondents prefer to use software from Tecmag, Acorn, and others to
process NMR data after transferring it to the local workstation and this has
special appeal for those wishing to be able to manipulate NMR data
independent of a network connection to the NMR Facility.

I predict that if we at SIU are successful in moving forward in this area,
we are likely to use a combination of approaches. Certainly the X-server /
X-client approach will be implemented because it affords the possibility of
remote operation and, hence, remote user training. I will try to put
together a more meaningful summary in a week or so. Again, many thanks to
those who took time to reply.

PERHAPS A LARGER QUESTION is the one that prompted this question AND I'D
LIKE TO SEE THIS BATTED AROUND ON THE LISTSERVER in a public discussion.

That is: to what extent are other Facility managers sensing, as do I, that
it will be necessary to devote considerably more commitment to undergraduate
instruction in order to keep their facilities healthy?

I have seen an alarming decline in research use of my facility over the past
three years and upper administration is indisposed to put more money into an
underused facility, even in terms of matching funds. If I am to upgrade my
VXR-4000 data systems to Sun host computers, the only grant proposals I may
write will have to have undergraduate curriculum enhancement as their
prominent feature. And a successful undergraduate program that puts my
facility in demand will likely be my best hope for getting funding for repairs.

A lot of subtopics suggest themselves: (a) what does your facility do to
enhance undergraduate instruction at your institution? (b) does dividing
your commitment between research and teaching create conflicts?

Responses to these questions will likely be too lengthy for summaries, so
please post to the group. However, if you don't want to I welcome personal
replies, of course.

Bill
