I thought I would share a useful and apparently undocumented
feature of XWIN-NMR. Forgive me if it is common knowledge - it
certainly isn't amongst colleagues I've spoken to in the UK.
On installation, XWINNMR inserts an entry into the root cron
table that causes the current helium level to be recorded in a
file at 3.00 am every morning. This file is /u/heliumlog; this
provides several possibilities for the people looking after
magnets to be informed and reminded of magnet state and performance.
For example, I have inserted the line:
tail -1l /u/heliumlog
into my .cshrc (you may use .login) so that the helium level is
displayed when I log in. Also, I have the spectrometer computer
mail me the last 10 entries every day so I can see if anything
is going wrong.
For those people using my process_pdata script to delete
processed data more than n days old I have placed on my server
an updated version that adds the helium level and free disk
space to the log file that is mailed to root on my server. By WWW see:
http://www.york.ac.uk/depts/chem/services/nmr/NMR_Links#specific
and by ftp see:
ftp://tesla.york.ac.uk/pub/process_pdata
Note that I find it useful to have root mail redirected to my
normal mail account my placing my email address in /.forward.
I hope someone finds this useful,
Graham Barlow
