When Jeff Simpson's request for information on the history of NMR came across
the net, one answer that came to my mind was an interesting history posted on
Varian's web site. When I checked there a few months ago, the site included
several pages about Varian's role in the development of NMR. If I recall
correctly, it was posted in honor of the 50th anniversary of NMR. After
sending this suggestion (which was written with rather heavier irony than I
would have used, had I known the message was to be broadly posted) to Jeff ,
and after reading Eric Enwall's response, I returned to www.varian.com and
discovered -- much to my embarrassment -- that Varian has changed their home
page and that it no longer includes the aforementioned history. As Steve
Patt noted today in VNMR News, there is a new web site --
http://vnmrnews.nmr.varian.com -- but I haven't checked this out, yet.
I'm sorry for the confusion, and hope that the tone of my original note
hasn't been misunderstood.
