I just read Cathy Lester's note about accessing the network and had a
somewhat (perhaps distantly) related question. PTRL is situated in a rural
setting and I have been exploring options on how best to hook up to the
network in such a situation. I would like to have full Internet capability
but can't afford long distance charges to the nearest city (where most of the
connect companies have dial-in access). NETCOM is the only full support
(ftp, etc.) source that I have found so far that offers an 800
number for a minimal charge per minute. I also have security concerns,
although NETCOM will provide server access (you dial out to and interact with
the server so there is no access to the spectrometer). Are there other
companies out there with similar offerings? Does anyone know a better way to
go about doing this?
Thanks in advance.
