Hi all.
I am Ron Brown. I attended the AMMRL meeting at the ENC in March and enlisted
awhile back. I promise not to take too much bandwidth after this, but I will
respond in areas where I have real info.
Here is a little info about me;
I got a BS at RPI and did some graduate work at Seton Hall. I started at
Merck Research Labs-Rahway as a synthetic chemist, and slowly got sucked into
instrumentation and NMR.
In 1983 Basic Chemistry purchased a Varian XL-200 and little did I know that I
would become manager of 7 supercons in the next 10 years ( 2- XL-200's, an
auto XL-300 with sample changer, 2-auto XL400's and 2- Unity -500's NMR's with
3mm H/C probes). Our 200 thru 400 NMR's are open-access and our 500's are
limited access instruments. We have 175 chemists on the open access and 75
selected researchers using the 500's. A sample of 5mg and 3-5 minutes will
get you a well shimmed proton spectrum on any of our user friendly
instruments. We have a time reservation server (programmed by Laird Trimble -
Merck Frost Canada) in each of the 2 buildings - 4 instrument rooms.
George Doss has written and maintains ChemNMR software on the 500's. George
& Byron Arison are NMR consultants for our Basic Chemistry researchers. Dave
Knapp, an X-Varian Service Engineer, services and maintains of all the 15
Varian NMR's at Rahway. My 4 labs crank-out more than 55,000 spectra a year
( 70% proton, 15% carbon, 15% 2D and specialty work) .
I joined AMMRL to see how other handle today's NMR situations, and also for
this old dog to learn some new tricks. I'll also enjoy passing on to others
many of the solutions we have found over the years.
Thanks,
Ron Brown
