spectrometer logon auditing

Sorry to bother about something that was discussed recently. There was some
traffic concerning systems to prevent unauthorized instrument use, reserve
instrument time, or log instrument time and I can't find it.

I need to set up some system to reliably report when my Varian spectrometers
(old VXR-4000 data systems) have been used. It needs to be somewhat
tamper-proof, and it needs to shut off spectrometer functions like
acquisition and plotting when the user logs off.

If someone would be kind enough to resend the old info or send some new, I'd
be grateful. I need to make a recommendation to THE DEANS next Friday. They
are concerned about a breakdown in the honor system.
