I would like to introduce myself and take the opportunity to ask your advice.
I am the assistant manager of the new Biological Sciences, Divisional NMR
Facility at the University of Chicago. The senior manager is Klaas
Hallenga.
The facility consists of 5 Varian Unity Plus Spectrometers (2x600,500,400
and 300) and has an array of SGIs and SUN Work stations for off line
processing.
This facility is dedicated to pursuing research in the biological sciences
and at the interface of chemistry and biology. The facility will shortly be
opening for use to members of the Biological sciences and other departments
within the University. We are presently trying to establish a policy and
scheme for recharging outside users for their use of the spectrometers.
Consequently I would be interested to hear from people who operate similar
facilites and get their advice about recharging and also scheduling. I
would be particularly interested in how people have factored in hidden
running costs such as replacement/upgrade of consoles, probes etc and any
other items that we may not have considered. I would also be interested to
know what fees other facilities are charging so that we don't make our fees
too unreasonable (or too reasonable). Any other advice on these matters
would be most welcome
David Jones
