Last week I brought up the subject charges for academic labs doing NMR
analysis for outside users. I received replies from 25 labs.
Cavaets: several people reminded me of rules against use of NSF
funded and/or federally funded equipment to compete with the private
sector
several people brought up the question of justification of rates-
should they be higher for outside users. If the
dept./university subsidizes the facility at all, then higher
rates for outside users seems justified, but how high?
Commercial rates:
My not-necessarily-complete value of commercial charges is:
$0.20/Mhz/hr
This is approximate based on what people said they had paid.
Lower fields are slightly less, higher fields are slightly more.
possible discounts for overnight runs
possible additional charges for "people" time
Academic rates:
several rates were listed as 2-6 times internal
one charges the same as internal
Facility-run samples:
~$10/hr - $100+/hr average about 65-80
overnight discounts: $180-300 overnight run
$15-40/ hour
User-run samples:
many facilites do not permit this, other will allow
former students only
~$10-75/hr average about 35-40
discounts for overnight runs $15-25/hour
Several respondents stated they thought their rates were too low. Based
on the statement above about not competing with the private companies,
many of these facility-run rates do seem a bit low (to me).
Thanks to those who answered.
