This message is being sent out to ask for your opinions regarding a gray
area that come up: can any vendor with an applications laboratory
contribute and thereby receive the hlist?
I should mention that the majority of opinions received concerning my
earlier message regarding 'who may receive the hlist' support the
limiting of list distribution to contributors. And so it shall be.
But now I am faced with the issue of whether or not to allow vendor
applabs to contribute. Clearly I should not accept any contribution
from someone for whom I am not going to furnish a copy of the list. So
the real question is, do I (by that I mean we, since this is going to be
done by consensus) turn away hardware list contributions from the
applabs?
I think one way to look at this is that the size of the list should be
maximized, and therefore the question might be "how many
people/contributions am I going to lose if I gain a couple of applabs?"
I want to know your opinions.
I have also composed a small statement-of-intent or credo, if you will,
as what I anticipate to be a largely symbolic gesture that will be
included at the top of the hlist and will hopefully gnaw away at the
conscience of anyone who distributes the list improperly. Here is a copy
of it...

This file contains a list of the NMR instrumentation and associated
hardware in the laboratories of AMMRL members. The information
contained herein is intended only for use by contributors to this
database. Rightful recipients of this list are expected to NOT
redistribute this list or any parts of it to others such that, as a
consequence of redistribution, the privacy of the contributors is
compromised in any manner (i.e. don't give away phone numbers and stuff
like that, but maybe it is ok to remark to someone how, for example,
there seem to be alot of new Bruker machines out there, without giving
away specifics...). I hope that all contributors to this list benefit
from it in some way, be it in the form of saving time and money in the
unfortunate and inevitable event of hardware failure, establishing new
contacts with laboratories with identical or contemplated
instrumentation, or finding similar, unsupported instrumentation for
possible consolidation.

There seems to be three ways to vote:
(1) vendors with applabs should not get it, but keep my contribution in
either way
(2) vendors with applabs should not get it, and count me out if they do
(3) vendors with applabs should be allowed to contribute and should
therefore receive the list
Also please refresh my memory as to whether you have already contributed
when you send me your opinion.
