am I back?

Well, my network appears to be up again. I will endeavor to find a more
reliable arrangement soon. It turns out that the system was receiving email
most all the time it was down - it just wouldn't let anyone, including root,
log in.

The response to the salary survey so far has been pretty good. Please, if
you haven't replied yet, do so now. Many of the replies have asked that I
provide breakdowns of the data according to various parameters. As salary is
quite a private thing for many people, I will provide breakdown data only in
general terms that do not invite anyone to guess at individual salaries. I
have received responses from the USA and abroad, both academic and
industrial. These will be treated separately in my report.

Again, the original criteria, which I am not going to change this late in
the game (maybe next time) are...

(1) Your name
(2) your institution
(3) your degree level
(4) number of years of relevant experience
(5) number of people reporting to you
(6) your gross annual salary (US $ equivalent for foreign respondents)
(7) low, medium, or high cost of living in your location
(8) your IQ....no, just kidding

I've got quite a bit of email to catch up on, so those of you whom I owe
personal replies please be patient. You're in my queue.
Bill
