All this talk on AMMRL about installing GigaByte disks on
Suns must have intimidated our poor OLD NT 360 system
because its 64 MegaByte 200lb disk had one of its head
crashes and went belly up.

These SMD disks always were a pain. Changing filters,
head crashes, so heavy it takes two people to move one,
limited storage space and NOISY. Not wanting to just get
it repaired for $2000.00, we explored the alternatives.
We found some SMD disk substitutes taking the same disk
cables as the current SMD we had. We tried one, ran
smdbuster from the Nicolet console and it work just that
easy.

These substitutes use a PC board and some internal smarts
to talk to a PC type ESDI drive and fool the computer on
the other end of the cable into thinking it is an SMD.

So after all the programs were transfer by 8 inch floppies
to the new disk, we are up and running with no problems.
We now have a 200MegaByte disk which does not need filter
changes, is not prone to head crashes, fits in a 19 inch
rack 5.25 inches high, is easily lifted by one person, and
is QUIET.

We got our disk replacement from:
Magnetic Resonance Services, Inc.
(512) 388-7355

This company offers turnkey disk replacements for these
old Nicolet SMD systems and, I think, for the old Bruker
SMD systems.

Happy MegaBytes to you..........
