In response to Bill Stevens post about test equipment:
One item which I have found to be useful is a calibrated
noise source e.g. Hewlett Packard 346B. With this (rather
pricey) item one can quickly determine the noise figure
for the entire system. Slightly funky preamps are quickly
identified by measuring the system gain with or without
the noise source "on". It requires a stable 28V DC power
supply.
