spectrometer air

We use boil-off from a very large liquid nitrogen tank (4 stories high)
to supply our 11 Varian spectrometers. This works very well. The
nitrogen is quite dry. We have run low temperatures for two or more
days without having the works freeze up. Of course oil contamination is
not possible (unless someone is working on the pipes up stream from
your lab!).
Permea (A division of Air Products I think) sells a membrane based
filtering system that delivers pure nitrogen gas from normal compressed
air. A freind used this on his FT IR for years with no contamination.
At any rate you should avoid conventional compressed air no matter
what.
