Minimum distance of 600 to elevators

I know 600 instruments site plans have been discussed here, but I need some
specific information to pass on to an architect. We are having a new
wing to our Chemistry building being designed, and I am trying to get
a site for a potential 600 located in the basement of the building.
Unfortunately, the architect found a table in a Varian site guide leading
him to believe the elevator only needs to clear a 2 gauss line.

Bruker recommends a minimum distance of 25 to 35 feet (depending on who
you talk to). I haven't yet gotten anyone at Varian to commit to any
specific distance. Help please!! I must convince this architect that
35 feet is the smallest distance (why not be safe!). Your comments
can help.
