CURRENT MAILING: The Shimming Handout by Gerry Pearson and
AMMRL Directory will be sent to all members. Those who are not on
email will also receive the Instrument Owners List (by Manufacturer).
Those members on email will receive the Newsletter and the Instrument
Owners List via email, as well as the email address summary. I will
send the email summary for May-November 1993 upon request as it is
too large of a document for mass mailing (86 pages!!)

ORGANIZATIONAL NOTES: As of December 21, 1993, there are
188 members of AMMRL, 160 of whom have email addresses (85%).
May-November were busy months for the email network, as shown by
the large amount of data generated. Once again I urge those not using
email to attempt to get "hooked into" the network. The most useful
aspect of this organization is quick communication for problem solving
and other purposes.
I summarize the email forwarding networks for NMR users
below:
AMMRL ammrl@bloch.cchem.berkeley.edu
requests to: mainzv@aries.scs.uiuc.edu or
requests@bloch.cchem.berkeley.edu (mention
ammrl)
ALMA alma-l@c-mols.siu.edu
requests to: alma-l-request@c-mols.siu.edu
BRUKER USERS
requests to: requests@bloch.cchem.berkeley.edu (mention
bruker)
VARIAN USERS varnet@aries.scs.uiuc.edu
requests to: mainzv@aries.scs.uiuc.edu
TECMAG USERS tecmag-
users@nmr2.chem.umn.edu
requests to: tecmag-users-request@nmr2.chem.umn.edu

AVAILABILITY OF ARCHIVED AMMRL EMAIL TRAFFIC:
1) All AMMRL email traffic (and also Varnet) is now available
via gopher - a much easier way to access this information than
anonymous ftp. If you are currently not using gopher, email me a
message at mainzv@aries.scs.uiuc.edu. Access is found via the
following directory tree (this is what I have to do when I login at UIUC.
Those of you who use it away from Urbana-Champaign presumably
have to find the Univ. of Illinois menu first.):
1) University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Campus
Information
2) Departmental Information
3) Chemical Sciences, School of/
4) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)/
5) AMMRL (or Varnet)
6) Choose the month and year of interest.
2) All AMMRL email traffic (and also Varnet) is also available
via anonymous ftp. If you want details, email me, as above.
3) Updates occur at the beginning of each month for the
previous month's traffic.
Many issues were discussed via email traffic from May-November 1993,
including moving magnets, cryopumping magnets at field, recommended
standard samples, vendor information and participation in AMMRL, the
effects of magnetic fields on pregnant people (and animals), staffing and
funding requirements for academic NMR labs, a survey of NMR tube
recommendations, and many more. As stated above, if you want a
copy, please phone or mail me a request.

ENC 1994:
"Special Interest Group Meeting (AMMRL-Association of Managers in
Magnetic Resonance Laboratories) -- Monday, April 11, 7-9:30 pm,
Organizer, Vera Mainz (University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois)"
I am looking for discussion topics and moderators for this meeting. One
topic which may be of interest is purchasing new systems - requests for
quotation, bids, demos, evaluation, etc. Please let me know your
suggestions.
AND NOW, consider the following (paraphrased from a Shaw Huang
email):
Could you spare some time to think about what AMMRL has
achieved in the past year and what it can and/or should do in the future?
Our main goal is to help each other in providing the best
resources for research and applications using magnetic resonance
spectroscopy through information and experience exchange. Of course,
there a are other things we, as a group, can do for the benefit of the
whole NMR/EPR community, such as funding improvement, instrument
(hardware and software) standardization, etc.
Most of us have so far enjoyed the benefit of
information/experience exchange, especially through e-mail network.
However, we have not really tried to excercise our combined effort.
Some members have indicated that we might need a more formal
structure (like ALMA) in order to have greater influence. In the next
few months, I would like to ask each member to give us (Steering
Committee) your thoughts about our infra-structure, and also what we
can do as a group.
DOES ANYONE WANT CHANGES IN THE
STRUCTURE OF AMMRL? IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY? Please
call, mail, or email me your vote, so when we meet at ENC 1994, we
can put this particular issue behind us. You can even use this page as a
ballot (so handy!!)
