Several weeks ago I posted an inquiry about any experince with
Gemini2000 spectrometers with Ultra 5 computers running Solaris 7 and
VNMR6.1B. Some of you asked for a report of my findings. I am glad to
report that we have found no problems with this configuration, provided
the full Solaris 7 +OEM is installed. It does not come with that
installation.
Also for your information and consideration. On July 19, 1999 our 300
MHz Gemini2000 spectrometer, its SUN Sparc5 host, a SGI o2 processing
station and 4 or 5 other computers in our department got hit by a
lightning strike. OUr NMR spectrometers and computers are protected by
a Best UPS. It did not blink. The strike was transmitted via the
ethernet cables. We know this because in each of our computers and the
CPU still worked but communication via ethernet did not. Also we
tested the circuits. We had to replace the SGI mother board, the SUN
host with an Ultra 5 and the ethernet board in the gemini rf console.
The rf console also suffered damage to the CPU board, lock transmitter
board, lock receiver board, proton amplifier board and some shorted
cables. We repaired and replaced these. The down time was five
weeks. We have now installed ethernet cable surge protectors on each
of our ethernet lines as close as possible to the computer. We
obtained those connectors from Southern Computer Supplies of Marietta
GA. Part numbers, etc. are:
