miracle magnet

Dear group,

I recently bought an Inova 300 console from Varian and just finished
installation using our 1987 vintage Oxford 89 mm magnet. The magnet does
not seem to be drinking any more helium now than when I got here in 1989.
It also appears not to have drifted a bit. Lock frequency has not changed
and neither has Z0 very much. The Varian installer was quite impressed.

I have always had an easy time with lineshape. We ordered 26-channel shims,
but the shim stack that arrived from Oxford was defective and a replacement
could not be obtained quickly so we decided to do the install with
18-channel shims and change later.

Our spinning lineshape is 2.0/5.0 Hz. Now, we all know that you just don't
get better than that. Should I keep the 18-channel and dicker with Varian
for other goodies? Or should I go ahead and swap for the 26-channel in case
the console outlives the magnet and the next magnet is not as good as my
current one?

Btw - and Rich should feel free to edit this out - Varian has been very
good to SIUC in terms of price, attentiveness, and professionalism. I am a
very satisfied customer - and they didn't ask me to say that.
