Really appreciate all who responded to my spinning query.
The Nays have it. Users should not leave their rotors spinning for no
reason. I especially liked the suggestion to charge by the revolution for
those inclined to spin needlessly. I think I could have retired already
with that being implemented:)
There were a couple of replies that stated that they do not see a problem
with letting it spin for a hour or so if another aquisition is about to
follow. One reply stated that they have left samples going for hours and
that there is really no wear and tear during spinning as long as the rotor
is at a stable spin. Wear and tear comes in at shutdown. I suspect for
these people they do not allow others to run on their machine and have a
very good idea when it is time to retire rotors and caps.
I have observed that rotor caps can loosen during the course of an
acquisition and in one instance fortunate enough to catch one before it
came off. I instruct users to check that their caps are correctly inserted
and tight. Maybe someone will design a probe with a cap gap monitor if they
can find room for it...
