Thanks to so many of you for responding to my query about NMR opportunities
for a friend of mine in Poland. I passed along each message with an
enthusiastic recommendation. All looked like good opportunities.

Piotr Dobrowolski has accepted a position at the Department of Biochemistry
and Molecular Pharmacology, University of Massachusetts Medical School
where he will be responsible for an Inova 600. I will encourage him to
apply to AMMRL as soon as he is settled in.

>From what I've been hearing, it has become difficult for even prestigious
institutions to attract qualified NMR managers. It seems that we are in
short supply. The last salary survey I administered was in September 1998
with the following results:

25K+ X
30K
35K XXX
40K XXXXXXXXXX
45K XXXXXXXXXX U.S. Academic Respondents, 1998
50K XXXXXXX mean salary = $53,430
55K XXXXXXXXXX
60K XXXX median to be reported later
65K XXXX
70K XXXX
75K X
80K X

This corresponded to the 1994 survey by multiplying the mean by (1.03)^4
which would cause me to predict that the current mean is about $56,684.

At my institution, I am payed about the same as a painter foreman and much
less than a refrigeration mechanic. I propose the following system to
improve our salaries. Based on alphabetical order from our membership
database, the N.C. State manager must quit and his position applied for by
the Univerity of Utah's whose position would in turn be sought by the
present manager at University of Houston, etc.

It will take awhile to get up to the letter 'S' but I would like to assure
the fellow at U of Louisville that he will like it here in Carbondale!
