B. Sivakumar, AMMRL;
All used and waste solvents need to be kept separate. DMSO with DMSO, CDCl3
with CDCl3 and etc. Waste containers need to be clearly marked and dated.
Of course MSDS forms for starting materials need to be kept on site.

HAZMAT procedures and regulations can be found at the US EPA. All known
toxins and hazardous chemicals in the starting materials should be ID'd.
These data should be happily provided by your NMR clients. Unknowns are
just that ... unknown and raise disposal costs exponentially.

If there are unknown compounds in the solvents then there is only one safe
method for disposal that I know of .... a certified HAZMAT disposal
company. If dumping or any form of intentional mislabeling is being done
at least in the US it is $10,000 fine/offense criminal infraction that is a
liability to the offending individual as well as the corporate officers. We
usually give back all of our samples and therefore have minimal disposal
costs but when we do have HAZMATS to dispose of, mixed solvents are more
expensive.

I hope this helps,

Robert Harker
