I've had a tremendous response from the group regarding our problem with a
Sun Sparc 5. I tried many of the very useful suggestions, but to no avail.
After reloading the operating system and the vnmr software, we still could
not establish communication with the console and the computer was not able
to complete fsck without errors. Luckily, we found a Sun Ultra hanging
around which we were able to borrow. I'd say it took all of a half hour to
get back in business and the instrument is now happily chugging away. I
haven't bothered to set up the accounting so everyone is all excited about
not having to pay $5/hour to run their stuff! Meantime we're looking at
replacing the hard drive in the sparc, which is only two years old. Two
observations -first, the problem we were having with the white welcome
screen hanging up seems to have happened to a lot of others users, but for
a whole variety of different reasons, and secondly, while we weren't
'hacked' as it turns out, I wasn't entirely sure that we hadn't been and
that made everyting just that much more complicated. The ultra we're using
at the moment doesn't have a second ethernet, so it's not networked, and
it's kind of relaxing.
Thanks again to all - you're the best!
cheers
