Hi all,
I've caused a problem for myself. For 14 years or so I have had a Compaq
Windows XP (Home Edition) laptop monitoring a cryoplatform via CryoTool.
The DRX console is not compatible with the TopSpin cryopanel.
This has been trouble free, until I decided to improve remote access
during the pandemic. I found a way of activating remote desktop control,
which is not normally available in XP Home Edition. Unfortunately this
was detected as a vulnerability by the UCI network computer people.
My first attempt at applying Microsoft patches resulted in an unusable
computer due to "Windows Product Activation:
A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for
this computer. Error Code: 0x80004005"
Online solutions to this did not work.
Next I installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Professional SP3 from a
disk. This worked for a while, but soon communication to the
cryoplatform failed.
Finally I reformatted the laptop and reinstalled the OS and drivers that
came on disk with the computer, but CryoTool is "Switched to offline mode".
So I'm looking for ideas for getting the communication working again.
In addition to the disks that came with the computer, I've installed
CryoTool_ae and drivers for the Keyspan USA-19HS USB to serial converter.
Originally Cryotool connected to the cryoplatform via COM5. Now the
Keyspan device seems to be installed as COM4. Whichever COM port I try
fails, but COM4 takes longer, which suggests it is getting a little further.
The cryoprobe is cold, and I have tried pressing the 'Cool Down' button
on the platform to clear errors.
I'm due a CP10K soon, so need to get this working.
Any ideas for fixing this setup or of a reliable replacement
configuration would be great!
Thanks,
Phil.
