I’m afraid I will have to weigh in on this one. Like Mac and PC users, there will always be dyed-in-the-wool Varian and Bruker users. Worse, the Varian users will probably be forced to use Bruker in the future. We have both kinds of spectrometers in our lab.
You can always rename the “1”, “2”, “3”, etc., files with whatever you want to call them after you download them from the spectrometer. We do all our data processing using MestReNova, so this is not difficult. I always recommend that people use the “title” file (text file) to describe the sample and experiment in detail. With XWinNMR, the command is setti. With TopSpin, there is a tab.
In training NMR users, I emphasize that the filename should be a description of the SAMPLE, not the experiment. Then I recommend a system for the experiment numbers: 1 for proton, 2 for carbon, 3 for DEPT-90, 4 for DEPT-135, 5 for COSY, etc. Each user can create their own system. Bruker does have the advantage that the data area is created and named BEFORE acquiring the data, so there is never a question, “Did I save the data?”.
Yes, the need to use numbers is annoying, but it does organize the data by sample.
Bruker’s file system will be understandable if you ever drive on a freeway in Germany. There are 20 or 30 destinations on each exit sign.
