The Purdue NMR Facility is in the process of upgrading computers
systems. We also are installing Solaris 8 in the process. We have replaced
SUN Sparc 5 systems with SUN Ultra 5 on two Inova300 systems. In the
process there is a requirement for a second PCI Net Card. We purchased the
Linksys LNE100TX net card and using this card as the interface to the
Inova300 consoles.
Initially, the communications to the consoles works correctly.
There is a slight modification to the Varian ./setacq program in order for
the software to find the Linksys card because of the PCI address. The
driver for the Linksys card is downloaded off the Web.
All seems to work correctly, then after a few days communications
between the host computer and the Inova console is lost. Every time someone
tries an over night run communications is lost. Sometimes, you can stop
acqproc and restart it and all works fine. Sometimes you have to reboot the
console and then the console sits there waiting to establish
communications. When this happens you then have to reboot the host
computer. On several occasions we have had to run ./setacq for the varian
software to find the second net card.
On one systems we have removed the Linksys LNE100TX card and
installed a spare SUN net/SCSI. After doing this we have not had anymore
communications failures.
Those sites who have installed the LINKSYS card, have you
experienced similar problems?
If so, what did you do to correct the failure?
I prefer to use the 3COM 3C905CX-TX-M PCI net card, but I can not
find any drivers for this card that will work with a SUN computer with PCI
slots. Has anyone found a driver for this card?

SUN wants as much money for two PCI net cards as you would pay for a new
SUN blade 100.

You assistance is appreciated.
