RE: zip and jazz drives

We use a ZIP drive with an SGI Indy running IRIX 6.2. Upon installation, it
was automatically recognized by the computer and worked like a floppy disk
but with much greater capacity. In our case, it is intended for users who
wish to keep a backup copy of their own data. It does have some strange
quirks, but they are tolerable for the way we use it. To begin with, it was
my intent to allow users of our acquisition stations (Sun Solaris 2.5) to
immediately backup the data from their acquisition session to the remote ZIP
disk. Unfortunately, as soon as the ZIP disk was accessed remotely, it
became impossible for the user to eject it and the Administrator of the SGI
had to login to eject the disk and then run fsck when a new disk was
inserted - almost like it got converted to a hard disk and was corrupted by
the disconnection. Our solution was to require the user to login directly
to the SGI and access the data from the remote disk mounted on the
acquisition station. Even with this arrangement, however, I have noticed
that all data copied to the ZIP disk is owned by root regardless of which
user is logged in and submitted the copy command. This is not a major
problem since it is world readable, but I haven't yet had a chance to
investigate the reason for this phenomenon. I would be interested in
hearing comment from others who have tried this as well.

Subject: zip and jazz drives

Hi,
Is it easy to hook up a zip or jazz drive to a SGI O2 computer and
make
it work as a back up ?? Thanks.
