Thanks to several AMMRLers for very helpful advice, descriptions, pictures,
and a PDF of the SampleXpress service manual, which I did not have (it has
complete installation instructions).

The highlights:

Yes, you can get at the shims and air bearing, and underneath the SampleXpress
the design is unchanged from years past with 3 screws holding the upper stack
and the shims together.

It's not necessary to remove the entire SampleXpress base unit to get at those
3 screws, it's enough to remove the cover plate underneath the cassette which
is held in place by 4 screws.

The base unit needs to be rigorously level. The level is set by the ring
underneath the base unit and the front legs. If the base unit needs to be
removed, the level should be reproduced if the position of the ring or legs
doesn't change.

Removing and replacing the base unit should be done with two people.

In case of problems with the SampleXpress itself, buying a new base unit outright
is $20,000 USD and a new cassette is $16,000. The alternative is having the
broken one repaired in Germany.
