Re: AMMRL: OS Updates and NMR software

Dear Lazaros,

I apply all OS updates and have never had an issue like you describe. Once, the yum update was interrupted midstream and then Iconnmr would not start even with complete reinstall of Topspin from disk. The problem was correct by running yum-complete-transactions. The problem was there were duplicates installed and these needed to be cleaned out.

I have had firewall issues when re-installing diskless. In spite of clicking no to modify the firewall, sometimes a default iptables file is installed, which wrecks havoc with my custom firewall setup. Bruker was going to fix this bug but it happened to me again (perhaps I clicked yes, but I don’t think so)

FYI, for those of you still running RHEL 4, and do not have access to the “extended” service or whatever RH calls it, here is the shellshock patch:

http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/EnterpriseLinux/EL4/latest/i386/getPackage/bash-3.0-27.0.3.el4.i386.rpm
rpm -ivh bash-3.0-27.0.3.el4.i386.rpm —force

Most of the OS updates may not matter although you may want to apply them just in case. Alternatively, the OS may be hardened by stopping all nonessential processes, by controlling access to the computer (e.g. with tcp wrappers), and by applying certain critical security patches (e.g. for shellshock vulnerability).

Network settings seemed fine. Resetting the console, restarting the computer, doing ha, cf, ii etc did not help. The IPSO was not recognized and the IPSO post code kept coming wrong. The problem was resolved when the ”diskless” software was re-installed from the TopSpin DVD. It may be a coincidence but CentOS updates had been installed the previous day.
