I had asked about rates charged for outside use of 800 MHz instruments.
Thanks to Carlos Amezcua, Sean Moran, Steen Nieblo, Francis Picart, Dave
Scott, Andy Soper, Tara Sprules, David Vander Velde, and Youlin Xia for
their responses.
Within the US, the rates charged break down as follows. Internal users
are typically charged $5-10/hour, with charges up to $15/hour for short
experiments or infrequent users at some institutions. Outside users from
other academic or non-profit institutions charge from $5-20/hour flat
rates or a multiplier of the internal rate to make up for overhead that
is typically taken out of grants for internal users - the multiplier
ranges from 1.5 to 3 times the internal rate. Industry users typically
pay from $130-$250/hour, although there are a couple of sites that
charge $50-60/hour plus an additional $100-120/hour for operator time.
Outside the US, there is quite a bit more range and fewer responses. One
site charges as little as $1/sample but is trying to drum up business
and not recover costs. Canadian sites seem to charge based on a
structure similar to the US, although I saw a special "government" rate
that was partway between academic and industrial users. European sites,
with the little data I have, seem to be less expensive for industry
users than their North American counterparts but still way above the
academic rates.
One last note is that some sites allow negotiation of the rates for
large blocks of time, while others don't.
Hopefully, some of you will find this information useful. Please feel
free to contact me with any questions.
