Dear All:
In response to Bill Kearney's questions, I took some time to attempt to
answer as much of this as I can, based on the current AMMRL list. Letitia
Yao, as a member of the "Junta", has compiled the membership list in a
spreadsheet, which allowed me to at least address some of the questions (in
part, anyway).
Bill asked the following questions:
1) The number of U.S. academic NMR facilities with full time staff?
The AMMRL doesn't differentiate between US and international members.
Although I could have tried to use the email addresses to estimate the
numbers, it simply got too complicated to try to figure out 906 addresses.
2) The total and academic membership of the AMMRL?
The total membership is currently at 906 (with some applicants pending).
Using the available information, I attempted to categorize the members as
"Academic", "Industrial", "Government", or "other". Because some of our
members have generic email addresses, there were some I couldn't put into a
category. In addition, many "institutes" could be considered either private
industry or academia, or government.
With the above disclaimer, here is the breakdown:
Academic Institutions: 580 AMMRL members
Industrial: 269 AMMRL members
Government/State Inst.: 46 AMMRL members
Other/Unknown: 11 AMMRL members
3) The fraction of magnets in the academic and industrial spheres.
I wouldn't touch this question with a 10-foot pole!
Personal Comment: Some administrator in Iowa has too much time on their
hands! :o)
Cheers,
-Rich Shoemaker
