problem solved - aborted X sessions

Thanks to many AMMRLers who replied. I learned valuable things even
from the wrong answers. What I had not thought of was that GNOME is
now an alternative desktop selection in Solaris 9. I am so used to 9
that it hadn't occurred to me that later issues included GNOME. (I
always install from any old media and then apply the latest
9_Recommended cluster - and somehow I've not disabled VNMR because of
patch incompatibilities.)

Anyway, once the user selects GNOME, it can't come up because the
account isn't configured for it. It has also become the default
desktop (user's last desktop) and the user needs to go back to the
source of his last misadventure and reselect CDE. Rolf covered this
in VNMR News.

As long as I'm hogging bandwidth, I'll update you on Solaris
security. I use Linksys NAT devices in front f my Sun computers. They
swallow pings and close all ports not deliberately opened. I keep my
hosts.allow very restrictive. Some people don't know to append the
following to syslog.conf:

auth.info /var/log/authlog
daemon.info /var/log/daemons
auth.notice /var/log/authlog

If you do that, authlog will show you all connections refused or
accepted and you will know who has been knocking on your door. I find
many attempts when sshd listens on port 22 and no attempts when I
make the listen port non-standard. Maybe that piece of info will be
helpful to someone.

Having gone on this long, I'll close with an unimportant question. If
I ssh into a Solaris 9 machine and select the default graphon
terminal (good for PuTTY), the .login hangs until I ctrl-C and I end
up with $TERM=xterm instead of $TERM=go140. It's okay, vi works and
displays properly, and go140 won't work. Since many of you
undoubtedly use PuTTY, what's the most elegant solution? Edit
everyone's .login so "g" defaults to xterm? Or just tell everyone to
ctrl-C? Not important I get an answer here.
