"mirroring" data on Linux servers

Hi all,

A few years ago, I wrote a Windows script that copies (Bruker Aspect)
data from a Windows file server through our firewall to a SNAP server.
The script copies only unarchived files; once the copy is done, the
script sets the file's archive bit. The script is very efficient,
running once every minute, and gives a complete mirror of our routine
data onto the SNAP drive. Students only use the data on the SNAP drive,
which is very nice for security.

We now have a Linux server, with a large hard disk (400G). We cannot
see an obvious way to do similar "mirroring" of the data from the Linux
server to our SNAP server. UNIX seems to have no "archive" bit to make
use of. We see various other possibilities, but before we just try
something, we would very much like to hear from any of you that are
doing something similar. It seems likely there is a "best" way to do
this kind of task in Linux/UNIX; perhaps one of you can lead us in the
right direction.

I'll gladly summarize, and feedback on our solution when that occurs.

Cheers,
Charlie
