Dear All:

There was a tremendous response to my little ENC survey, and after a
huge initial surge of responses, they finally slowed to a trickle. I
decided to cut it off at 128 responses, and I spent some time last night
(and this morning) figuring out how to present the data. The results
are posted as in .PDF format at http://chemnmr.colorado.edu/ammrl/ .
One file is graphical (bar-charts), and the other contains the actual
data, separated out by Lab-type (Industrial vs. Academic) and frequency
of attendance. For the "Weighted Averages", I weighted the answers from
those who almost always attend ENC more heavily than those who rarely
attend.

My 2-cent summary (based upon the data, and the many e-mails I received
in which people elaborated on their answers) follows...(feel free to hit
"Delete" now if you wish 8-):

Clearly, the most valued aspect of ENC is a tie between the science
presented at the Poster Sessions AND the interactions with vendor
representatives at the Hospitality Suites (I deliberately didn't ask the
importance of free beer because I didn't wish to bias the results
<grin>).

Acknowledgement: the beer seems free to us, but many of us know how much
vendors spend on the hospitality suites, both in money and time/effort.
These results clearly indicate that these efforts are HIGHLY valued by
the AMMRL members who responded to the survey!

Maybe not surprisingly, the ENC AMMRL meeting was highly valued by
academic managers, but much less so by industrial AMMRL members. This
could be due to the fact that the meeting is mostly organized by
academic-types, even though we've had many EXCELLENT presentations by
our industrial colleagues. If the AMMRL members from industry have
specific ideas about how to make the AMMRL meeting at ENC more relevant
to them, please consider sending suggestions to any member of the
steering committee (see:
http://www.chem.yale.edu/%7Ebangertr/ammrl/steer.html ).

I'll shut up now. For those residing in parts of the world that
recognize the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday, please accept my best
wishes, and my extreme THANKS for each and every one of you as part of
our AMMRL community!

Kindest Regards,

-Rich Shoemaker
