forum on Sun computer issues

Fellow AMMRL members,

I have been visiting many issues/questions relating to Sun computers
lately. The more I ask around, the more I learn that many knowledgeable
people have many of the same uncertainties. Among these:

How many accessories that plug into PCI slots actually have drivers
available so that Solaris can use them on Suns with the PCI bus?

What operating systems and computers are compatible with the HAL/diff box
interface?

If you boot a 64-bit OS in 32-bit mode, is there a HAL-compatible SCSI
driver in the later Solaris versions? (I recently learned that you can load
your disk with 64-bit OS but "setenv boot-file kernel/unix" before boot
will bring you up in 32-bit mode.)

The Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 use EIDE-ATA drives and Solaris installer CD's
will load them but Solaris's format command may tell you that you need to
get the disk manufacturer's format utility, so MY FIRST QUESTION IS

Will any EIDE-ATA drive work as master or slave? Or just specific ones? My
drives in my Ultras are Seagates. Format doesn't work on them.
