For monetary reasons you might not want to install a CD-RW on a UNIX box;
the hardware is fairly cheap(scsi only), but the software is a big chunk of
money, although academics could probably get it cheaper--something like
$500-700. As far as I know, the CD-RW machines simply write whatever is
sent to it, regardless of format. We have a 2GB jaz drive on one of our
UNIX boxes and it works fine. It is almost as fast as a regular hard drive.
However, the disks are very expensive and require care in handling, unlike
the CDs(for a student environment, go with a CD).

That sounds like a good idea!
one caveat for those who have not used a CD burner, it takes MUCH longer to
burn
a cd than to just copy a bunch of files to a jaz or zip drive.
a few questions I don't know the answer to:
1) how easy is it to install and use a CD burner on a unix machine?
2) can you write PC and MAC compatable formats?
3) Would a ZIP or JAZ drive be a better (faster, cheaper) solution?????
4) Can a ZIP or JAZ be connected to the unix machine and write PC/Mac
compatable
formats????

Why not go with a CD-RW. These devices now run as cheap as $99 and the
disks for write only are around 50 cents in bulk(maybe even cheaper for
academic)and for the re-writeable, a bit more. For archiving, they are
great; just use the write-only disks. For working data use the re-writeable
disks. If each user cannot get a unit, you can have a designated PC for
this purpose. Then just copy the data straight without tarring and
reprocessing would not be such a headache.

Dear AMMRL's:
We have about 60 NMR users on one of our Bruker instruments; the number will
be
more than 80 next year. The hard drive on our SG O2 is only 4 GB (about 40%
was
left after installing IRIX 6.5 and XWINNMR 2.6). The department may not
spend
1,800 for an 18 GB hard drive. Even if we can buy a big hard drive it will
be
full very soon again.
I am going to ask NMR users to move their data to their own PC or Macintosh
because their hard drive can be more than 10 GB. The followings are what I
am
going to ask them to do:
(1) Telnet to our SG O2 from their PC or Macintosh, go to their data
directory
and tar their files.
(2) Use Anarchi (Macintosh users) or CuteFTP (PC users) ftp our SG O2 and
move
the tar files to their computers. Delete their tar files and original data
in
our SG O2.
(3) When they want to check their data again, they can use Anarchi or
CuteFTP
put their tar files back to our O2 for a very short time.
How do you think about this? Do you have a better and cheaper way? Should I
worry about virus in their PC and Macintosh?
