At least with a Mac one can avoid the tar steps by running Fetch (from Dartmouth;
free for educational users). We use Fetch to transfer the data from the SGI
to the Mac (can handle any number of nested directories) and back
without the need
to tar anything. When transfering from the Mac back to the SGI one can
specify the
permissions the file/directory is to have. We have used this approach
for some
years. Or use the free SwaN-MR and process the data (1D or nD) on the Mac.
I believe that wsftp can do the same thing in the PC world.
Anyone know of a utility for ftp of entire directories between SGI's without
making a tar archive?
