Rediculous Question...

I have just been asked to provide an estimate for the cost to renovate
enough square-feet to house a complete, new NMR facility here. Oh yes, I
have to give this answer immediately. There is some rumbling about a major
instrumentation facility grant that would move me into the basement (yuck,
no windows). I have no idea where this is going to lead, but my AMMRL
colleagues seem my best resource at the moment because I only have ~3 HOURSs
to come up with a number.

Basically, the area will be large enough for two 600s, our 500, our 300,
another 300, and our 200. It may also house the X-ray crystallography
facility (which will mean that I will have to move it just after I build it)
and other instruments.

This space used to house our rather large machine/instrument shop (which was
taken away). There is no environment control, dry/clean gas supply,...etc.
I could just make a crazy guess, but I thought I would give some of my
experienced colleagues a chance to better educate my guess. I know Roger
Kautz recently underwent a renovation, so Roger...if you're out there...a
very approximate estimate of the cost of renovation per-instrument would be
very helpful.

Please direct replies to me directly. I will post a summary if the
respondents don't mind.
