AMMRL: Helium Recovery System experience?

Dear AMMRL community,

Our NMR lab is considering the purchase of a helium recovery system and liquefier. Obviously, we would prefer a robust system that requires minimal attention or maintenance. Minimal cost and installation effort would be nice as well. Does anyone have experience with such a creature? A colleague brought to our attention a system by Quantum Design, the ATL160, that looks promising. Have any of you used this particular system? If so, can you please share with me your experience?

A few more questions immediately come to mind:

  1. What percentage of helium can I practically expect to recover, though I assume this would depend a lot on the design of the system as well as the carefulness of the user?
  2. Liquefiers appear to employ a coldhead and compressor.
     * How often do these need to be serviced?
     * How expensive is this service?
     * Do the end users typically perform this service?

Thanks and best regards,
